Nicodemus, Kansas
RCC Masonry was selected to restore a building on the Nicodemus National Historic Site in Nicodemus, Kansas — the oldest and only remaining western town established by African Americans during the Reconstruction era. Because the site is federally protected, every aspect of the work had to preserve the building's original character while bringing it back to sound, weather-tight condition. We tuckpointed the entire structure and chimney, carefully matching the original mortar in color, texture, and joint profile so that the repointing reads as historically correct. Throughout the walls we replaced individual stones that had cracked, spalled, or eroded beyond repair, sourcing replacements that matched the surrounding stonework in tone and finish so the wall continued to read as a single, original elevation. We repaired the historic windows in place rather than replacing them, and installed a new chimney cap to stop ongoing water entry at the crown without altering the silhouette of the chimney. The result is a restored, weather-tight building that still reads exactly as it did when it was first built — preserving the integrity of a National Historic Site for future generations.
