Concrete Pool Decks

Pool decks in McHenry and Lake County face a challenge that most Sun Belt contractors never encounter: the concrete must perform in 95°F barefoot-comfort conditions in July and survive -10°F deep freeze in January with standing water and ice. This 105-degree temperature range creates enormous thermal expansion and contraction stress that requires specific engineering decisions at every step of the pour.

The first consideration is slip resistance at wet conditions. A pool deck that's safe when dry can become dangerously slick when wet with pool splash. We apply a specialized broom or "cool deck" texture that provides consistent grip even when submerged. For stamped pool decks, we add a non-slip additive directly to the sealer — microbeads of aluminum oxide or polymer grit that create an invisible but effective texture. The key is applying these additives during the final sealer coat, not mixed into the concrete itself, where they'd be buried below the surface.

Chlorinated pool water is another factor unique to pool decks. Splash-out and backwash water contains chlorine levels that chemically attack the calcium hydroxide in standard concrete, gradually weakening the surface paste. We use a slightly richer mix design (higher cement content) and apply a penetrating silane-siloxane sealer that blocks chlorine penetration while still allowing the concrete to breathe. This sealer must be reapplied every 2-3 years in our climate — a small investment that prevents costly surface repairs.

Joint design around pools is particularly critical in Northern Illinois. We install isolation joints where the deck meets the pool coping, allowing the slab and pool structure to move independently during frost heave. Control joints are cut in a radial pattern from the pool edge, typically every 8-10 feet, to control cracking direction. Without proper jointing, freeze-thaw movement will create random diagonal cracks that are nearly impossible to repair aesthetically. Every joint is filled with a flexible, self-leveling polyurethane sealant rated for pool chemical exposure and UV stability.
