Concrete Driveways in Lakemoor, IL

Lakemoor sits on heavy CL-CH classification clay soils typical of the Fox River corridor. This soil expands when wet and contracts when dry — and during spring thaw, it can heave upward with enough force to crack a 4-inch slab like a cracker. Driveways poured on minimal gravel or directly on native soil almost always fail within 5–8 winters. The fix is a properly engineered sub-base: at least 6 inches of CA-6 crushed limestone, compacted in lifts to 95% Modified Proctor density with a plate compactor. We won't pour without it.

Finally, joint placement and drainage. We saw-cut control joints within 6–12 hours of the pour, to ¼ slab depth, spaced no further than 10 feet in either direction. Every driveway is sloped at a minimum ⅛" per foot away from the garage, eliminating the ponding water that destroys non-air-entrained concrete in two winters. These are the small specs that turn a 10-year driveway into a 40-year driveway.
