Expert Concrete Steps & Stairs
Safe, durable, and beautiful concrete stair solutions for your home or business.
Free EstimateHow do we guarantee a perfect stair finish?
Steps are the most visible part of many concrete projects. We guarantee a great finish by using custom-built wood forms that ensure every riser is identical in height (to within 1/8th of an inch). We 'vibrate' the concrete during the pour to eliminate air pockets (honeycombing) on the face of the steps. Finally, we hand-tool the 'nose' of every step for a smooth, rounded edge that looks beautiful and resists chipping.
Our Stair Rebuilding Process
Structural Demolition
We remove the old stairs down to the frost line. If needed, we install concrete piers or 'pins' into the foundation to prevent the new stairs from pulling away from the house.
Precision Forming
We build heavy-duty forms using 2x8 or 2x10 lumber. We calculate the exact 'rise and run' to ensure your stairs are comfortable to walk on and meet all local building codes.
Consolidated Pouring
We use a low-slump concrete mix (less water) to ensure the steps are dense and strong. We use internal vibration to ensure the concrete is packed tight against the forms for a smooth face.
Detail Finishing
Once the concrete 'sets up', we remove the riser forms and hand-finish the face of the steps. We apply a slip-resistant texture to the treads and a protective sealer.

Materials We Use
We use commercial-grade materials engineered for the demands of Northern Illinois stairwork.
4000 PSI Concrete
Low-slump, air-entrained mix that provides dense, durable steps resistant to freeze-thaw damage and salt exposure.
Steel Rebar
#4 rebar placed throughout the stair structure ties the steps to the foundation and prevents shifting or separation.
Non-Slip Broom Finish
Medium broom texture applied to all treads provides reliable traction in wet and icy conditions year-round.
Form Liners
Precision-cut lumber forms ensure uniform riser heights and clean, professional edges on every step.
Concrete Vibrator
Internal vibration eliminates air pockets (honeycombing) for a smooth, defect-free step face after form removal.
Penetrating Sealer
High-quality sealer applied after curing reduces water absorption and protects against salt and freeze-thaw cycles.
Common Step Repairs We Handle
These are the most frequent concrete step problems we solve for homeowners across McHenry and Lake County.
Crumbling Edges & Nosings
Freeze-thaw cycles and salt exposure cause step edges to deteriorate. We rebuild with dense, low-slump concrete and rounded bullnose edges.
Steps Settling Away from House
Frost heave pushes steps away from the foundation. We excavate to the frost line, pour proper footings, and pin steps to the foundation wall.
Uneven Tread Heights
Non-uniform risers create a trip hazard and fail code inspection. We rebuild with precision forms to within 1/8-inch tolerance.
Handrail Anchoring Issues
Loose or improperly anchored railings compromise safety. We set post sleeves during the pour for the strongest possible connection.
Surface Spalling & Flaking
Deicing salt and poor finishing cause the top layer to peel. We tear out and repour with air-entrained concrete and proper sealing.
Structural Cracking
Deep cracks through the step body indicate foundation movement or inadequate reinforcement. Full tear-out and rebuild is the lasting solution.
Cost Expectations
Honest pricing for concrete step projects in the McHenry and Lake County area.
Front Entry Steps (3-5 risers)
Full tear-out and rebuild with rebar, footings, and sealer
Side/Back Entry Steps (2-4 risers)
Standard rebuild with proper drainage and non-slip finish
Large Staircase (6+ risers)
Extended stair runs with landings and handrail anchoring
Step Overlay / Resurfacing
Bonded overlay on structurally sound existing steps
Handrail Post Installation
Cast-in-place sleeves or drilled anchors for railing attachment
