How to Choose the Right Concrete Finish for Your Project

Choosing the right concrete finish impacts both the appearance and performance of your project. The same concrete mix can look rustic, modern, elegant, or industrial depending on the finishing technique. And in Northern Illinois, some finishes perform better than others under our freeze-thaw conditions.

Here's a practical guide from RCC Masonry & Concrete to help you pick the right finish for every application.

Broom Finish: The Versatile Standard

Broom finish is created by dragging a stiff-bristled broom across freshly floated concrete, creating parallel lines that provide excellent traction. It's the most common finish for driveways, sidewalks, garage aprons, and any surface where slip resistance is critical. Cost: $6–$10/sq ft installed.

Best for: Driveways, sidewalks, garage floors, utility slabs

Illinois consideration: Broom finish handles de-icing products and freeze-thaw cycles well because the textured surface allows slight surface expansion without visible damage.

Stamped Concrete: Decorative Elegance

Stamped concrete mimics the appearance of natural stone, brick, slate, or wood plank by pressing textured mats into fresh concrete. Combined with integral color and release agents, stamped concrete delivers stunning visual results at 40–60% less than natural stone installation.

Best for: Patios, pool decks, entryways, outdoor living spaces

Illinois consideration: Stamped concrete requires resealing every 2–3 years to maintain color and protect the texture. Use a sealer with a non-slip additive for any stamped surface exposed to rain or snow.

Exposed Aggregate: Natural Texture

Exposed aggregate reveals the natural stones within the concrete mix by washing away the top layer of cement paste before it fully cures. The result is a pebbly, textured surface with natural color variation. It's durable, slip-resistant, and visually interesting without the ongoing maintenance of stamped concrete.

Best for: Patios, walkways, pool decks, driveways

Illinois consideration: Exposed aggregate performs exceptionally well in freeze-thaw environments because the textured surface and exposed stones are inherently durable. Choose rounded river rock aggregate rather than angular stone for the most comfortable walking surface.

Polished Concrete: Interior Sophistication

Polished concrete transforms a standard slab into a glossy, reflective floor suitable for basements, garage floors, and commercial spaces. The process involves grinding the surface with progressively finer diamond pads and sealing with a densifier. The result is an extremely durable, low-maintenance floor.

Best for: Interior floors — basements, garages, retail spaces, warehouses

Illinois consideration: Polished concrete is interior-only. Never use a polished finish outdoors — it becomes dangerously slippery when wet.
