A McHenry County family was ready to replace their 15-year-old wood deck. It required annual staining, had developed soft spots from rot, and the stairs were becoming unsafe. They wanted something beautiful, durable, and virtually maintenance-free — and they didn't want to sacrifice aesthetics for practicality.
The Vision: Natural Stone Look, Concrete Durability
After consulting with RCC Masonry & Concrete, the homeowners chose a stamped concrete patio in an Ashlar Slate pattern with a warm "Sandstone" integral color and "Walnut" release for contrast. The design included a curved seating wall with natural stone veneer to define the outdoor living space and provide built-in seating for entertaining.
Project Overview
Phase 1: Deck Removal & Site Preparation
The old wood deck was demolished and hauled away. The deck's concrete pier footings were removed, and the entire patio area was excavated to 12 inches below the finished grade. We installed 6 inches of compacted CA-6 crushed stone sub-base — more than the 4-inch minimum because the site had clay soil that needed additional drainage capacity.
Phase 2: Seating Wall Construction
The curved seating wall was built on its own reinforced footing (below the 42-inch frost line). The core is concrete block, veneered with natural limestone that complements the stamped concrete color palette. The wall is 18 inches tall (ideal sitting height) with a limestone cap that doubles as a comfortable, smooth seating surface.
Phase 3: Pour & Stamp
The patio was poured in two sections to ensure proper stamping timing — stamped concrete must be textured at exactly the right stage of curing. The integral color (mixed into the concrete before pouring) ensures the color runs the full depth, so it never wears off. Powdered release agent (Walnut color) was applied before stamping to create the natural color variation that makes stamped concrete look like real stone.
Phase 4: Detailing & Sealing
After curing, the surface was washed to remove excess release agent, revealing the two-tone color effect. Touch-up staining was applied to accent specific "stones" for added realism. Finally, two coats of high-gloss acrylic sealer with a non-slip additive were applied — enhancing the color depth while providing a durable protective layer.
The Result
The family went from an aging, high-maintenance deck to a stunning outdoor living space that looks like natural stone but requires only periodic resealing. The built-in seating wall eliminated the need for extra patio furniture, and the step-down transition from the house creates a natural flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.
