Concrete Sidewalks
Durable, trip-free walkways designed to last through Illinois winters.
Free EstimateHow do we guarantee a great sidewalk finish?
A great sidewalk finish starts with precision. We don't just pour concrete; we engineer paths. By using fiber-mesh reinforcement and high-PSI mixes, we ensure your sidewalk doesn't settle or crack. Our finishing team uses magnesium floats for a smooth surface before applying a fine-hair broom finish that provides perfect traction while looking clean and professional.
Our Sidewalk Process
Sub-Base Engineering
We excavate 4-6 inches and install compacted stone. This provides the drainage needed to prevent 'frost heave' during Illinois winters.
Forms & Pitching
We set forms with a 1/4" per foot pitch to ensure water drains away from your building and landscaping, preventing puddles and ice patches.
Reinforced Pouring
We use 4000 PSI concrete with integral fiber reinforcement. This provides 'secondary' reinforcement throughout the entire slab, not just where rebar sits.
Jointing & Finishing
We hand-tool or saw-cut control joints every 5 feet. We finish with a consistent light-broom texture and tool all edges for a crisp, high-end look.
Our Sidewalk & Walkway Work

Materials We Use
We select proven, high-performance materials engineered for Northern Illinois conditions.
4000 PSI Concrete
High-strength air-entrained mix designed to resist freeze-thaw cycles and heavy foot traffic common in McHenry and Lake County.
Wire Mesh Reinforcement
6x6 welded wire mesh placed on chairs provides consistent crack resistance across the entire slab area.
Broom Finish Surface
A fine-hair broom texture applied during finishing provides excellent slip resistance in wet and icy conditions.
Control Joints
Saw-cut or hand-tooled every 5 feet to control cracking and create clean, uniform panel lines.
CA-6 Crushed Stone Base
Compacted aggregate sub-base provides drainage and prevents frost heave — critical for Illinois sidewalks.
Penetrating Sealer
Applied after curing to reduce water absorption, salt damage, and surface staining for long-term durability.
Common Sidewalk Issues We Fix
Illinois weather and soil conditions cause specific problems we see — and solve — every day.
Tree Root Damage
Roots lift and crack sidewalk panels, creating trip hazards. We remove damaged sections, install root barriers, and pour new concrete.
Frost Heave
Freezing soil pushes panels upward, creating uneven surfaces. Proper sub-base preparation and drainage prevent recurrence.
Settling & Sinking
Poor compaction or erosion causes sections to drop. We rebuild with engineered sub-base to eliminate future settling.
ADA Compliance Violations
Uneven panels, excessive slopes, or missing detectable warnings. We bring walkways up to current ADA standards.
Surface Spalling
Salt damage and freeze-thaw cycles cause the top layer to flake off. We replace affected sections with air-entrained concrete.
Cracked Control Joints
Improperly spaced or missing joints cause random cracking. We install joints at correct intervals for controlled movement.
